Effilee magazine explores the science and soul of Retsina
We are deeply moved and honoured by the feature in Effilee – one of Germany’s most renowned magazines dedicated to food and wine – written by wine journalist Sebastian Bordthäuser and photographed by Myrto Papadopoulou.
The article, titled “Harz, aberherzlich”, is a reflection on how science, sustainability, and cultural heritage can coexist to redefine a historic wine.
In his vivid narrative, Bordthäuser follows Eleni Kechri and the 1979WINES team from the heart of Goumenissa to the pine-covered hills of Halkidiki, revealing a world where research meets the history of Greek wine – and where resin, long misunderstood, emerges as the element that redefines Retsina
“What if we suddenly took the much-maligned concept of Retsina seriously?
What if we treated it with the same respect as a Grand Cru?” — Effilee
Through the article, Bordthäuser describes how Eleni’s scientific research on pine resin opened a new path, unveiling the “forest terroir” and the remarkable complexity of Retsina’s own terroir.
Each origin, each drop of resin, becomes part of the wine’s identity.
“It’s not only about the purity of the resin,” […] “but also about its origin.”
Thus was born the concept of the double terroir — a Retsina defined not only by the provenance of its grapes but also by the provenance of its resin. — Effilee
For us, this feature is much more than recognition.
It gives voice to our conviction that Retsina represents a field of endless possibilities — a living expression of the soul of Greece.
