1979WINES
In 1979, a Presidential Decree was issued establishing the 'Retsina Appellation by Tradition' category.
Honoring this significant milestone for Greek wine, 1979WINES leverages scientific research to shed light on the lesser-known aspects of Retsina, covering the entire spectrum from production to the etiquette of enjoying this unique wine.
Research
The company was founded by Eleni Kechri, a Chemical Engineer and Oenologist, as a natural continuation of her extensive career and expertise in developing new products within the Retsina category.
The driving force behind the creation and development of 1979WINES is scientific research.
Through the research process, each vintage brings with it a new discovery, and each discovery, in turn, poses a new question.
In this way, new knowledge opens fresh pathways, guiding us toward showcasing every aspect that makes Retsina distinct and unique in the world: its aroma, flavor, ingredients, history, and culture

Sustainability
At 1979WINES, we are fully aware that our activities have a direct impact on society and the environment.
For this reason, since our foundation, we have embraced practices aimed at reducing our environmental footprint while empowering our partners, believing that small, simple actions, collectively, can make a significant difference.
Resin collection
In our quest to investigate whether the use of chemicals in resin collection affects the final result in retsina, we created, for the first time, a wine produced with sustainably sourced resin.
Our research confirmed what our senses perceived: resin collected sustainably, without the use of chemicals, adds a new dimension to retsina.
The Legacy of Retsina
The story of retsina is intertwined with the stories of people who have cherished it daily for centuries. This tradition inspires us and is a treasure we aim to share.
To honor this heritage, we have created an open-content platform to celebrate the culture of retsina through the stories of those who hold it close to their hearts—especially the people of Thessaloniki.

Our Commitment
In the chain that connects the production of our raw materials to the consumer's glass, there are many stages we cannot control. Yet, we are committed to working toward climate neutrality across all our activities.
Until we achieve this, we will plant trees annually to offset part of the CO2 generated by our operations.

Terroir
The terroir of retsina surpasses the complexity of any other wine. The soil, climate, and human care shape the character of both the grape and the resin, the two raw materials that unite to create a wine inextricably linked to our land and cultural heritage.
There are few wines in the world you can associate with their place of origin with absolute certainty. Among these, retsina stands out as a living bridge between nature, tradition, and the art of winemaking.
At 1979WINES, we are dedicated to highlighting every facet of this rich terroir—from its unique raw materials, the grape and the resin, to the culture related to retsina. Through research, we strive to deeply understand the richness of retsina and share it with the world, spreading its unique legacy and flavor beyond borders.
